Day Construction converted the interior of this 1930’s
historical building into a fiber optic clean room, including
state-of-the-art technology, under-floor cabling and
complete replacement of existing wiring. Simultaneously,
the architectural integrity of the exterior of the building
was maintained under the watchful eye of the City Historical
Society. This project was one of six completed by Day
Construction for Level 3 Communications.
The
system’s design included 300% redundancy to ensure
a fully operational facility in case of a catastrophic
event. The building is directly adjacent to the railway
and the operation utilizes the railroad right-of-way
for cable. This presented right-of-way issues, including
scheduling, safety and training -- all of which were
addressed throughout construction.
Carefully
planned and meticulously executed construction provided
the key to this project’s success. Using the long
lead time on the materials and equipment to their advantage,
Day Construction was able to work on the clean room
and the extensive raised floor environment simultaneously.
Old wiring was replaced with new materials that could
support uptime requirements. A project plan was created
that allowed the team to work around the railroad’s
schedule without negatively impacting construction.
The
1930’s exterior was fully preserved, but the building
interior is 21st century.
